Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary (NPO 056-575 | PBO 930028734) is situated 4kms before the village of McGregor, on the edge of the Klein Karoo.

We provide a permanent home and loving care to destitute, rescued donkeys. Our team assists with the rehabilitation of donkeys and we are involved in the training and support of donkey welfare practitioners. Come and learn about these humble and gentle creatures.

Thursdays to Sundays we (and our tribe) welcome visitors where you can interact with the donkeys with our visitor guides; browse the donkey and book shop; enjoy a light meal in the Coffee Shop; buy some Eseltjiesrus wine or beer; visit the Heritage display of donkey-related farm implements; meander along Adam’s walk and visit our Memorial Cairns to remember a loved one.

We cater for most special dietary needs and are licensed to sell our Eseltjiesrus wine and beer.
Eseltjiesrus is open Thursdays to Sundays 10am to 4pm. Groups of more than six, please call in advance. Entrance is by voluntary donation.
